Join me, Jeremy from Environmentarian, as I visit a remarkable hempcrete home built for resilience and sustainability after the devastating 2019 bushfires. Designed by Kirsty Wulf of Shelter Building Design and built by Jace from JV Building & Contractors, this home showcases the power of fireproofing, thermal efficiency, and sound insulation, all thanks to hempcrete.
I’m joined by Will Brain from Hempcrete Victoria to explore both cast-in-place and prefabricated hempcrete block methods used in this build. His company, Respirabuilt, provides affordable prefabricated hemp solutions for fire-prone areas.
Key Features of this Hempcrete Home

- Fireproof & breathable walls – Naturally resistant to flames and embers
- Smart passive design – Positioned for natural light and thermal mass benefits
- Bushfire resilience – Non-combustible materials and ember-proofing
- Sustainable materials – Carbon-sequestering hemp and rainwater collection
