In this very short video I visit a normal house. A normal Sydney suburban hempcrete house. Normalising hempcrete housing in regular suburbs around the world is an important step in building awareness and debunking the stigma of hemp.
Cannabis should not be taboo or weird with 1000s of uses for humans that can benefit societies with minimal impact on our environment. Hemp in fact repairs degraded land whilst it sucks in carbon from the air at a much higher rate than trees.
On 4-10 acres, depending on several factors, we can grown enough hemp that can be processed into hurd, the material used for building. With the right conditions hemp can have 2 or even 3 harvests a year. Thats a lot of houses that have all locked in so much carbon that their total embodied energy is close to zero and often negative carbon.
Additionally, due to the insulative properties of hempcrete the ongoing energy needed to thermally control (heat and cool) internal spaces is minimised. So can hempcrete housing save and house the world? Maybe not straight away but it’s an important step in decarbonising the building industry. And lovely houses like this show how it can be done. Thanks so much to the owner for welcoming me into your lovely home, our long extended chats and allowing me to do this little YouTube piece to show off your almost finished hempcrete home.
