About Us
The Hemp Building Directory was launched in July 2023 by Jeremy and Kirstie to help people wanting to build with hemp connect with architects, designers, suppliers, builders and installers working with hemp. It has quickly grown to have a large number of providers listed and a great mailing list which compliments our 12k likes on our Facebook page.
Hemp grows fast, almost anywhere, and sequesters tonnes of carbon as it does. This carbon is locked away creating highly insulated walls that not only limit the amount of fossil fuels needed to control internal thermal temperatures but continue to sequester carbon through a process of carbonisation. It’s a win for the planet and for the people.
So far we are entirely self funded with paid listing going live and the beginning of the financial year July 1st 2024. This may help us cover some running costs but to continue to grow and reach our goals we are looking at different avenues for funding. So if you want to help us suck carbon out of the atmosphere, help farmers, help owner builders, and much more please reach out.
How it happened…
It’s a small world and we are all connected so when Kirstie Wulf of Shelter Building Design posted on the Hemp Building Australia Facebook Forum that she was interested in connecting with people to start a Hemp Building Directory, Jeremy Thomas BD of Environmentarian quickly reached out to say that he had been wanting to build this important website for a while and was keen to get cracking.
Their combination of connections, quick thinking and actioning, life, design and business skills have quickly brought the idea to life with industry professionals joining the Hemp Building Directory and helping to create a wealth of connections and knowledge so we can create more hemp structures around Australia.

Hemp Building Directory Mission Statement
HBD is a space to find all about building with hemp in Australia. We have a wide range of business services listed all across Australia from Building Designers and Architects, to suppliers, builders and installers. We also have heaps of information about hemp building including articles and videos.
We are here to help people interested in building with hemp connect with the information and network they need to get planning and get building.
Building causes up to 40% of the world’s carbon emissions. Building with hemp however is virtually carbon free. Our mission is to be a vehicle for the delivery of information and services so that more structures are built with hemp in Australia. This provides a benefit to farmers who have a new cash crop that rehabilitates soil and all those along the supply chain to the end client – the people living in hemp structures who will save money in the long term (on heating and cooling costs) and know that they have contributed a legacy of a building that is as sustainable as possible…
Hemp captures large amounts of carbon when it grows. Hemp buildings capture and lock in carbon. Then the structures need less carbon (fossil fuels) to manage internal temperatures. These things alone, not including the long list of benefits of building with hemp, is why we should be building more hempcrete structures. The Hemp Building Directory is such an important piece of that puzzle…

We can’t stop progress but we can build it more sustainably!
