About Us

The Hemp Building Directory launched in July 2023 as a social enterprise with a simple mission: connect people who want to build with hemp with the professionals who can make it happen. Founded by Jeremy Thomas and Kirstie Wulf, the directory has quickly become a valuable resource for architects, designers, suppliers, builders, installers, and anyone interested in sustainable construction.

Building a Network, Building a Future

Hemp offers a compelling solution for eco-conscious building. It’s a fast-growing crop that thrives in many climates and acts as a carbon sink, absorbing and storing carbon dioxide throughout its growth cycle. This translates to highly insulated walls that not only reduce reliance on fossil fuels for heating and cooling but also continue to sequester carbon, creating a win-win for the environment and homeowners. Did we mention it is fire an bug resistant?

Growing Together

As a social enterprise, the Hemp Building Directory is committed to making a positive impact on the environment and the community. While paid listings help cover some of the platform’s running costs, our primary focus is on fostering sustainable building practices and supporting the growth of the hemp industry. We are actively seeking grants and partnerships to further our mission and expand our reach.

How it Began: A Shared Passion

The power of connection is at the heart of our story. When Kirstie Wulf of Shelter Building Design expressed a desire for a hemp building directory on the Hemp Building Australia Facebook Forum. Jeremy Thomas, founder of Environmentarian, saw the perfect opportunity to turn their shared vision into reality. Their combined expertise in design, business, and environmental advocacy, along with a network of industry professionals, has fueled the rapid growth of the Hemp Building Directory. We’re building a community of knowledge and connections, paving the way for a future filled with sustainable hemp structures across Australia.

Hemp Building Directory Mission Statement

HBD is a space to find all about building with hemp in Australia. We have a wide range of business services listed all across Australia from Building Designers and Architects, to suppliers, builders and installers. We also have heaps of information about hemp building including articles and videos.

We are here to help people interested in building with hemp connect with the information and network they need to get planning and get building.

Building causes up to 40% of the world’s carbon emissions. Building with hemp however is virtually carbon free. Our mission is to be a vehicle for the delivery of information and services so that more structures are built with hemp in Australia. This provides a benefit to farmers who have a new cash crop that rehabilitates soil and all those along the supply chain to the end client – the people living in hemp structures who will save money in the long term (on heating and cooling costs) and know that they have contributed a legacy of a building that is as sustainable as possible…

Hemp captures large amounts of carbon when it grows. Hemp buildings capture and lock in carbon. Then the structures need less carbon (fossil fuels) to manage internal temperatures. These things alone, not including the long list of benefits of building with hemp, is why we should be building more hempcrete structures. The Hemp Building Directory is such an important piece of that puzzle…

We can’t stop progress but we can build it more sustainably!
