Improving Hemp Straw Management for High-Quality Building-Grade Hurds

For those in the hemp building industry, consistent, quality and improving hemp hurds is essential, especially when producing materials like hempcrete or hemp-lime insulation. This guide is designed specifically for hemp farmers, straw suppliers, and decorticators aiming to produce reliable feedstock for the construction sector. By focusing on effective on-site straw management practices, it helps reduce the risk of spoilage, which can compromise hurd quality and performance. Early identification of potential issues means less product wastage, more timely decisions about alternative uses, and better clarity around pricing and salvage value.

Tailored to the needs of the hemp decortication process, this guide provides clear management targets to support the production of clean, uniform, and structurally sound hurds suitable for building applications. Developed in line with internationally recognised standardisation principles, it serves as a practical interim solution while we await more accessible, in-field testing methods. Backed by ASTM International, whose globally recognised standards help ensure safety, quality, and performance, this resource brings much-needed structure and reliability to a rapidly growing green building material supply chain.

Standard Guide for Hemp Straw Intended for Decortication

Scope

1.1 This guide can be used by hemp farmers, hemp straw companies and hemp decorticators to target aspects of straw management that assist consistent quality.

1.2 This guide provides guidance for on-site management targets to help manage against potential spoilage. This guide will assist targeted use(s) until feasible in-field tests are developed that can reliably assess factors related to hemp straw spoilage.

1.3 Product wastage will be reduced if spoilage is avoided or identified early. Decisions to retarget to other uses may be done earlier and this may also help assess pricing, discounts, and salvageable hemp straw.

1.4 The values stated in SI units are to be regarded as standard. The values given in parentheses after SI units are provided for information only and are not considered standard.

1.5 This standard does not purport to address all of the safety concerns, if any, associated with its use. It is the responsibility of the user of this standard to establish appropriate safety, health, and environmental practices and determine the applicability of regulatory limitations prior to use.

1.6 This international standard was developed in accordance with internationally recognized principles on standardization established in the Decision on Principles for the Development of International Standards, Guides and Recommendations issued by the World Trade Organization Technical Barriers to Trade (TBT) Committee.
