MA Hempcrete Duplex Development Ready to Welcome Residents

The largest hemp project in the United States consisting of 12 duplex units in Newburyport, MA will open to residents next month. Builder David Hall and architect Keith Moskow of Hall and Moskow Corporation have been working since 2023 on the Hillside Center for Sustainable Living, an attainably-priced multi-family housing development, from their own design of hempcrete over steel frame panels. The new hempcrete development will move in its first residents on February 15.

“I think it’s fascinating that Newburyport was a major hemp hub in the 1700’s where they made all the sails and rope for the ship building that was here,” said Hall, who was inspired by this when he and Moskow were looking for sustainable materials to use in their project.

Lower Sioux Community to Host 13th International Hemp Building Symposium

An international gathering of hemp building experts will host its annual conference and expo in the United States for the first time at the Lower Sioux Indian Community in Morton, MN in October, 2025.

The Ireland-based International Hemp Building Association announced this week that the group’s 13th annual event will focus on the entire industrial hemp supply chain from growing hemp in local farms to processing and then building with hemp materials. The Lower Sioux are among the first hemp processors in the United States who have built multiple homes using local hemp grown and processed by the same community. The event will be co-hosted by Pennsylvania-based Americhanvre Cast Hemp, who license the Ereasy spray hempcrete system used by the Lower Sioux hemp builders who built four structures on the Lower Sioux reservation last year.

“Materials derived from hemp crops have been shown to provide a range of sustainable and environmentally friendly solutions for building comfortable homes,” a press release from IHBA’s founder Steve Allin said. “On the Lower Sioux Reservation, processing facilities havebeen established to produce these materials as part of the “Seed to Sovereignty” project. This initiative aims to build and upgrade homes, offering genuinely affordable housing for members of the tribal community.”

World’s tallest hemp hotel set to open in June in South Africa

With 12 storeys, a breathtaking view of Cape Town’s imposing Table Mountain and a minimal ecological footprint, the world’s tallest building made with industrial hemp is soon to open its doors in South Africa. Workers in central Cape Town are putting the finishing touches on the 54-room Hemp Hotel, which is due to be completed in June.

“Hempcrete” blocks derived from the cannabis plant have been used to fill the building’s walls, supported by a concrete and cement structure. Hemp bricks are becoming increasingly popular in the construction world thanks to their insulating, fire-resistant and climate-friendly properties.
