Ashford Hemp Industries is looking ahead to building another hemp processor in 2026, following the successful establishment of the Ashford Hemp Processor in New Plymouth, New Zealand, last year. Connie and Leon are excited to see the continued development of the hemp industry in New Zealand’s North Island, building on the earlier establishment of an Ashford Hemp Processor in the South Island.
The model being followed by Venture Taranaki aligns closely with Ashford Hemp Industries’ own approach of promoting regional hemp hubs. Locally grown hemp supplying a local processor, which in turn supports housing and other hemp-based materials within the same region, creates a strong sustainable, economic, and environmental model. Beyond the immediate income generated from crops and processing, the longer-term benefits include improved housing quality, local employment, and a wide range of new business opportunities at both micro and macro levels.
Leon spent an extended period in New Plymouth during this installation, which incorporated a different bagging system to previous models. One of the advantages of being directly involved in installations is the opportunity to build strong relationships with others in the hemp industry, many of whom bring a diverse range of skills and experience. New Plymouth was no exception, and Leon greatly enjoyed working closely with the excellent team at DFE New Zealand.
Alongside the final stages of the processor installation, Leon was shown some of the region’s outstanding local sites, sampled locally brewed beer and homemade specialty meats, and, together with Connie, enjoyed a memorable dining experience with the Taranaki Adventures team. Ashford Hemp Industries looks forward to future opportunities to work with Venture Taranaki again in 2026, and to returning some of the generous hospitality received during their time in New Plymouth.
