Hi reader,
As we flew into Geelong we marvelled at the patchwork of farmland made more striking by the sections of yellow canola. Throughout the conference references were made to how a change in perception from ‘rapeseed’ to canola helped that industry grow into the huge agricultural sector it is today, and how hemp is currently going through that perception change.
It was great to be part of the Australian Industrial Hemp Conference (AIHC), where hemp fibre was covered deeply. HBD was also proud to sponsor the event. Kirstie and I presented on Cooperation & Competition: click through the slides and check out a few photos.
Explore SBDs hempcrete barn house in Kangaroo Valley, showing how passive solar design, exposed timber and hempcrete can come together to create a warm, low-energy home. It's great to see Hemp Respira Drywall, a natural hemp-based alternative to plasterboard, bringing hemp into another familiar part of the building system.
And finally, MIH and Wild Materials recently brought a showcase of hemp building to Bachli Furnure's Surry Hills showroom for Sydney Indesign. It’s another sign of hemp materials becoming part of the broader design and building conversation.
We are building our Supporter Memberships for individuals and businesses and simple one-off contributions. No listing or industry connection required, just a shared belief in hemp building's future, check it out if you can help keep HBD going. And if you need specific info for your project go ahead and Book a Chat!

I do a helluva lotta of unpaid mission driven work for the hemp building industry because I believe in it so much. But belief doesn't pay the bills. If just a few people reading now could contribute it would mean a lot to me. Contribute here. A big thanks to recent individual contributors Sean for 3 coffees and Edward for 24 coffees!

In Kangaroo Valley, a contemporary hempcrete barn house replaces an ageing brick veneer home. Passive solar planning, an exposed timber frame and a clever roof solution to a 5.5-metre height limit deliver barn character and winter comfort.

RespiraDrywall is natural hemp drywall, a like-for-like replacement for plasterboard. Cleaned hemp hurds, a formaldehyde-free binder, no gypsum, no cement. Vapour-open, so healthy indoor air is built into the wall.
