With over 450 people now receiving these updates, we’ve realised it’s time to reframe what this really is: you’re not just a subscriber — you’re a member. A Subscriber Member, to be exact. Welcome.
Why This Matters
The Hemp Building Directory isn’t just a website. It’s a community of changemakers… builders, designers, growers, innovators, curious homeowners, and sustainability advocates… all exploring how to create buildings that are better for people and the planet.
Our mission is to make building with hemp more accessible, better understood, and more widely adopted. That starts with connecting and informing people like you. And frankly, if you’ve read even one newsletter or clicked through to an article, you’re part of this movement. And we thank you.
So we’re drawing a line in the (hempcrete) sand: if you’re subscribed, you’re a Subscriber Member. You count. You belong.
What Does Being a Subscriber Member Mean?
Right now, it means:
- You’ll continue to receive curated updates from us
- You’ll get first notice of new case studies, videos, interviews and events
- You’re helping build a more sustainable future by staying informed and engaged
In the future, we may experiment with ways to recognise and reward Subscriber Members more formally, perhaps with early access to reports, giveaways, or even the chance to vote on what we do next.
But one idea is already brewing…

A Page from History
When the base of the Statue of Liberty needed funding, it wasn’t wealthy elites who made it happen. The project’s leader, Joseph Pulitzer, ran a public campaign asking ordinary people to chip in. In return, he published the names of every single donor no matter how small the contribution, in the newspaper.
It worked. Over 120,000 people donated. Many gave just a dollar or less. But the recognition, being publicly acknowledged as part of something meaningful, created a movement.
We’re not building statues here. We’re building homes. Carbon-smart, breathable, healthy homes for the future.
And we think the same idea could work today.
Planting the Seed for Next Month
We’re exploring a way for Subscriber Members to contribute, even just $10, to help keep the Directory running, videos edited, case studies published, and the newsletter flowing. And get recognised for this. If they want.
And like Pulitzer’s newspaper, we’d thank every contributor by name in the following month’s newsletter (unless you prefer to stay anonymous). You’d be part of this story, not just as a reader, but as someone who helped make it happen.
We’re not ready to launch this just yet, but we wanted you to be the first to hear about it. And we’ll share more in the next edition.

Our Next Milestone: 1000 Members
Once we hit 1000 Subscriber Members, we’ll need to make some decisions, both technical and strategic. Do we trim inactive subscribers? Do we start paying for a premium email platform with better analytics and features? We’re not sure yet, but we’ll keep you in the loop.
